Since the dawn of civilization food cloth and shelter are indispensable for the sustenance of human life. The crying need of food for life is being supplied by the peasant community. Human beings are being supplied with clothes by the weaver community to transform them from barbaric being to the civilized. Thus these communities have become the torch bearer of the progress of human civilization. To spin thread for weaving clothes is a hoary tradition of the weaver women. In time of the Freedom Movement of India to motivate the people of India to turn down foreign textile, the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi and our former Prime Minister Pandit Jahawarlal Nehru and others under the leadership of Indian National Congress established noteworthy and praiseworthy examples of spinning thread in Spinning Wheel popularly known as “Charka” and also encouraged only to use the indigenous clothes made by the weaver community of India. As a result of this, an out burst of patriotism reigned in the whole country.
Let us come to the glorious history of the Mallahbhum weaving society and about their small scale cotton industry. The temple city Bishnupur, besides achieving fame in ancient art and architecture became well known for its weaving art. But to reveal the truth it cannot be denied that such fascinating choice of the women the Baluchari Saree did originate at Mallahbhum or Bishnupur. Actually in the year 1704 a village in Murshidabad district adjacent to Ziagonj, called Baluchar, which is now an obsolete place as it sank into the Ganges, first Baluchari was designed and produced. The village has become obsolete but its eminent art Baluchari is now reigning with vigour, honour and dignity in the whole world, to be one of the fascinations of the women.
At Bishnupur weaving of Baluchari started following the creative art genius of Akshay kumar Das. He was earnestly helped by the dedicated worker of Bishnupur Silk Khadi Seva Mondal late Hanuman Das Sarda supported by another worker of Bishnupur Silk Khadi Seva Mondal, Gorachand Diyasi, an inhabitant of Barakalitala Mahalla, who in the year 1958 to1959 made first Baluchari with the help of England made Jacquard Machine with a compact weaving of the design made on punching card. Tapas Das an inhabitant of Bishnupur Dhulapara has made an incomparable and praiseworthy design to make a perfect testimony of this gorgeous art. These three artists created a landmark in the creation of Baluchari.
This cloth, Baluchari after winning eminence with its enriched design, conveying the message of The Ramayana, The Mahabharata, social folk culture and folk education won India and started its long journey for abroad with a triumphant glory to win the whole universe. Thus escalating popularity of the Baluchari Saree became a matter of pride of Mallahbhum. Resham’s Tana accompanied by Resham Poren and bedecked with various Resham’s thread and gorgeous design Baluchari as well as Swarnachari became more popular. On the other hand entire work of Zori (golden thread) on the bed of Resham in its golden beauty came to be known as Swarnachari. The weaving process of Baluchari and Swarnachari as well as their design and grandeur is almost the same. In the age of the Ramayana the Golden deer stole away the mind of Sita whereas in the present epoch the sister of Baluchari known as Swarnachari has stolen away the heart and love of the women and also has become the heart throb in the world of fashion.
In 1962 when China and India was fighting between them, the then Governor of West Bengal Mrs Padmaja Naidu held a meeting at Bishnupur, appealing the people to donate liberally in the National Defence Fund. In this meeting a Baluchari entitled Smriti Rekha was offered to Mrs Naidu on behalf Bishnupur Silk Khadi Seva Mondal. Former Prime Minister of India Mrs. Indira Gandhi was offered a Baluchari entitled Malabika Baluchari, when she came to Bishnupur on election campaign. When the Queen of England Elizabeth II came to India, she was handed over with great reverence a nice and splendid Banuchari in remembrance to the art and culture of Bishnupur, on behalf of the Government of India.
